TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK.
This is Kenya’s largest national park and covers an area of 11,747km2, lying northeast of the main Nairobi – Mombasa highway. Substantially different to Tsavo West N.P. the park is bisected by Kenya’s second longest perennial rivers, the Galana River, giving rise to permanent greenery around the river in contrast to the dry, semi-arid and sparsely vegetated vistas beyond. Special permission is required to visit the northern sector of the park due to banditry and ongoing campaigns against poachers. Hence, the bulk of the action takes place in a relatively compact area within the southern section of the park.
Untrammelled and wild, it is a fantastic destination for game watching offering a really remote and wild setting especially since few other tourists are likely to be encountered. The game tracks run parallel to the rivers and tributaries and with the terrain being flatter compared to its counterpart, the park offers excellent game viewing opportunities.
The Big Five are present along with large herds of elephant and buffalo. The elephants of the Park are often referred to as red elephants due to them bathing and covering themselves in the rich red soil of the park. Other mammals include giraffe, zebra, impala, gazelle, Coke’s hartebeest and numerous antelope. The park is also home to the endangered black rhino. Amongst the predators, lions are frequently encountered but cheetah, leopard, hyena, serval cat and African wild dog are also present. Though the latter two can be difficult to spot.
Birdlife is very similar to that in Tsavo West National Park.
