RUBONDO ISLAND NATIONAL PARK.
A small hidden gem of an island, some 220kms west of Serengeti, Rubondo is tucked away in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria and is the jewel of the 457 km2 National Park. Rubondo’s tranquillity and unique beach scenery makes it completely different from the other savanna parks of Tanzania. Further, as it is not on the standard tourist trail and because of this it has few visitors, thus making it a true safari experience.
The island mostly comprises tropical lowland forest interspersed with patches of grassland, swamp and deserted sandy beaches.
Wildlife in this park is more difficult to see compared to the savanna grassland parks but many large mammals are present including hippo, sitatunga antelope, bushbuck, vervet monkey, colobus monkey, genet and mongoose. Elephant, giraffe and chimpanzee have been introduced into the park over recent years. The chimpanzees in this park are not habituated.
Rubondo Island is probably the best place to see sitatunga antelope. The population density of sitatunga on the island is one of the highest in Africa thus presenting a unique opportunity to observe this very elusive antelope, which is often almost impossible to see in other parks.
An alluring destination for bird watchers, Rubondo Island presents exceptional ornithological opportunities. This is particularly true between December and February as it is a staging post for many migrating birds.
There are numerous species of large water birds including different species of stork and heron and a very dense population of fish eagles.
Additionally, flocks of African grey parrots can often be seen. These were released onto the island after they were confiscated from illegal dealers and exporters.
