LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK
This little gem of a National Park lies very close to the hustle and bustle of Nakuru; Kenya’s fourth largest town. This relatively small park of 188km2 has a lot to offer with some unique opportunities to see some of the rarer mammals not so easily seen elsewhere.
At the heart of the park lies Lake Nakuru, famed for its immense concentrations of flamingos giving the lake a pink tinged aura. Described as the “most famous bird spectacle in the world” it is akin to the mammalian version of the great migration in the Mara and the Serengeti. The hundreds of thousands of flamingos make for a unique and mesmerising site to behold. The flamingo population at any given time is directly related to the lake water levels which are prone to fluctuation. It is estimated that the flamingo population varies between 500,000 at a minimum rising up to 1,500,000. The alkaline nature of the lake is what provides the algae which is the basis of flamingo diet.
Many other bird species are also present, especially fish eating species including large numbers of great white pelicans, fish eagles, marabou stork and other water fowl. This park is not ideal for birding as walking within the park is forbidden.
Nakuru National Park is home to some highly-endangered species such as the black and the white rhino. This park offers the best and easiest opportunity to see rhino compared to almost all other game parks. It additionally offers excellent opportunities to spot leopard who are present in relatively large numbers. Other mammals present include lion, buffalo, giraffe, hyena, waterbuck, warthog, impala, gazelle, eland, zebra, baboon and vervet monkey.
